Calgary soccer fans thrilled with CanWNT gold medal win

CALGARY – Soccer fans in Calgary set their alarms to go off before the sun rose, all to get a glimpse of Canada’s women’s soccer team in its gold medal matchup.
And it paid off.

Fans at Trolley 5 pub were optimistic and excited as Canada and Sweden took to the field a little after 6 a.m.
The mood among the 75 fans and some Olympians at this pub going from happy and excited to sour after Sweden scores its first goal. Canada nil – 1 Sweden. They're still hopeful Canada will win.

The excitement was quelled after Sweden managed to put away the first goal of the game.
The mood switched again from sour to determined as Canada returned the favour, making the score 1-1.
After two extra halves–and no change in score– the pub became more tense as Canada and Sweden players lined up for the penalty kicks that would ultimately decide the game.

Fan Shauna believed Canada would win the game from the get-go–and she was right.
The bar erupted in joyous screams and shouts as Canada’s made the final shot, securing the gold medal.

People wandering past the pub couldn’t help but be drawn in by the electricity from the fans celebrating.

“I am so proud,” Shauna shared.
“To win in penalty shots–or to lose in penalty shots–is just mind-blowing. I coach soccer for the Villains here in Calgary, my girls are watching right now. What an amazing accomplishment for women’s soccer!”
She says the Canadian women fought hard for their win.
“Sweden had a really strong team, but we battled back. We were exhausted, slightly sloppy at times–but the heart!”
She says the atmosphere in the bar was intense throughout the game.
