Alberta has not asked for military assistance, CAF says

CALGARY – The Alberta government has not asked the military for help amid surging COVID cases, the armed forces says.

The Canadian Armed Forces says it has received no request for support from the UCP, but a call for help can still be issued.

“If the emergency escalates beyond [local] capabilities, assistance can be requested from the federal government… Public Safety Canada is the lead in coordinating a federal response to such operations,” the CAF said in a statement.

In an emailed statement, the CAF says it’s still working with government leaders to provide help where needed.

NDP leader Jagmeet Singh suggested at a campaign stop that the CAF should be sent to Alberta to help manage the surge in COVID-19 hospitalizations.
