2021 Municipal Election breakdown: Ward 5

CALGARY – Located in the northeast corner of Calgary, ward five is a diverse community. According to the most recent census, 57 per cent of residents identified as immigrants.

While there are a number of single-family homes, the ward often sees many generations living together under one roof.

The ward has been hard hit by COVID-19, and also hail.

In 2020, a summer storm caused one billion dollars in damage, much of it in ward five.

Francisco Alaniz Uribe, an urban planner from the University of Calgary’s School of Architecture, says we need to be ready for more storms like this.

“What climatologists are saying is that we are going to see more extreme events of nature, where you have a lot of precipitation in a short amount of time.”

A year and a half later many are still trying to rebuild and protect their homes from the inevitable next storm.

George Chahal, who is not running for re-election after winning in the federal election, was a vocal leader who helped bring in some roof rebates and other reliefs for residents.
