2021 Municipal Election breakdown: Ward 8

CALGARY – Calgary’s Ward 8 encompasses 20 communities nestled south of the Bow River and east of the Elbow River, a mix of infill neighbourhoods like Altadore, as well as downtown residents of the Beltline.

Development, transit, parking, and park space are important issues throughout the ward, and have been long-time concerns of residents in Marda Loop, Altadore, and Richmond.

Resident Cindy Slack says locals are seeing increased density at a new level never seen before, “down our street we had two semi-detached bungalows, that now instead eight townhouses, will be turned into sixteen townhomes.”

Slack says residents have recently challenged some developers, but have been overruled by the city and its desire to build up the area.

The recent changes to the Richmond Greens has also been frustrating.

Slack says she is looking for better representation. “I’m looking for a councillor who will represent the citizens,” she said.

Residents will have a new voice at council as Evan Woolley, who was first elected in 2013, is not running again.
