Calgary mayor kicks off all-Christmas music playlist at CHFM

It’s the start of the holiday season for many, including Calgary’s CHFM, which has officially flipped and is now only playing Christmas music.

Mayor Jyoti Gondek was there to kick off the start of the holiday jams on CityNews 660’s sister station and says Christmas music make her feel warm and loved.

“It reminds you of being with your friends and family reminds you of the fact that there are people in this world who don’t have the things we have and that we still have to care for them,” said Gondek.

She also says during the holiday season, we all need to be mindful that the “Most Wonderful Time of the Year” might not be that happy for some.

“When I think of the people that have lost someone in their life or someone that’s going through a crisis or trauma, Christmas just piles up on top of it because you’re supposed to put on the facade of happiness,” she said.

“And I think what I’ve noticed over the last few years is that people are very aware that others may not be either as fortunate as them or in a position of happiness like they are. And I’ve seen a lot of people really reach out and ensure that others are okay, but think we’ve become much more compassionate around Christmas.”

The new mayor says one of her favourite Christmas memories was when she was little–her Grade 4 class went to a Manitoba seniors’ home and sang carols for them.

You can catch the all-Christmas music station at 95.9 on the FM dial.
