Calgarians will be able to ring in the new year with a firework show in the city’s downtown core.
The City of Calgary has organized a firework display for 12 a.m. on Jan. 1.
The fireworks will be launched from atop the Calgary Tower and will be synchronized to music on CKSW 90.9.
“After last year’s fireworks cancellation, we’re thrilled to have the dazzling fireworks show return to ring in 2022,” said Mayor Jyoti Gondek in a statement.
“Fireworks on New Year’s Eve lift our spirits and are also a symbolic reminder that brighter days are on the horizon.”
The show will be live-streamed for those wanting to watch from the comfort of their own homes and will feature a blessing from a local Indigenous elder as well as a countdown to midnight with Gondek.
Some streets downtown will be blocked off for the duration of the firework display:
• Centre Street S.E., from 6 Avenue S.E. to 9 Avenue S.E., will be closed
• 9 Avenue S.W., from 1 Street S.W. to 1 Avenue S.E., will be closed
• 9 Avenue S.W. south sidewalk, in front of the Calgary Tower, will be closed
