Alberta cold warnings continue amid frigid temperatures

The freezing temperatures in Alberta will stick around for a bit longer, with an extreme cold warning continuing for almost the entire province.

An artic air mass is blanketing not just Alberta, but much of western Canada, including B.C.

The windchill in Alberta can make it feel like -40 C — or even -50 C — in some parts.

“This system right now is basically stalled over top of us. It’s going to start moving around closer to mid-week, and then kind of slides back down into this area, again, a little bit later on in the week, I guess into next week,” explained Environment Canada Meteorologist Justin Patten.

“It was just a big arctic air mass that slid down over Alberta,” he added, noting, “it’s going to move around a wee bit.

“It may not move out altogether, it looks like … at least the coldest temperatures, move into Saskatchewan near the end of the week.”

While this may be good news, Patten says Alberta will be in store for another round of very cold temperatures for the beginning of January.

With temperatures as low as they are, you’re being warned that frostbite can develop with minutes on any exposed skin.

While Calgary didn’t break any historical temperature record on Monday, it was the coldest day of the month up until then, at -32.9 C.

Airdrie and Edmonton did hit new minimum daily temperatures Monday, with -40.6 C and -41.6. These mark the lowest temperatures for each city since Environment Canada began keeping records.
