Suspicious Airdrie death being investigated as homicide, man charged

A suspicious death in Airdrie last week has now been deemed a homicide following the completion of an autopsy.

Around 8 a.m. on Thursday, police were called to a business in the northeast quadrant of the city for a man who was said to be in medical distress.

During the investigation, a wellness check was also done at a home in another area of the city.

Police say during the wellness check, one woman was found dead inside the home. The woman has now been identified as 48-year-old Melanie Lowen.

One man was taken into custody and police had said no other suspects were being sought. That man has since been charged with second-degree murder.

The man charged has been remanded into custody and will next appear in court on Jan. 17.
