Traffic in front of Calgary city hall was disrupted for several hours by protesters Monday morning, resulting in dozens of tickets from police.
According to CPS, more than 30 summonses were issued to drivers involved in the demonstration, which was held in opposition to COVID-19 mandates.
“Approximately 50 additional tickets will be mailed to the registered owners of vehicles identified as participating and committing an offence,” police said Monday afternoon.
The tickets were issued for a number of violations, many of which were traffic related.
The convoy came after demonstrations were held across the country over the weekend, including in the city, in solidarity with an anti-mandate protest in Ottawa that’s now stretching into its second week.
After sowling traffic through the downtown core Monday, protesters eventually ended up parking along Macleod Trail in front of city hall, blocking two lanes. Protesters could be seen waving flags and carrying signs that spoke out against public health measures.

“Due to the heightened emotions around these and other demonstrations, it must be noted that due to safety concerns for both law enforcement and members of the community, it is not always prudent to issue a ticket at the time of an alleged offence,” CPS explained of its decision to not ticket dozens of individuals on the spot.
“Much like today, tickets are issued in the hours or days after an infraction based on evidence obtained at the time of the event.”
