Armed Calgary carjackings of Amazon delivery vans lead to charges

Calgary police have charged four people after three Amazon delivery vans were carjacked over the last few months.

Between Dec. 2021 and Jan. 2022, police say three Amazon delivery drivers were confronted by men threatening them with either a gun or bear spray.

In each instance, the drivers are said to have been forced into the vehicle and driven around for some time before being dropped off unharmed. Police say it’s believed the offenders would work in a coordinated effort to steal packages from the van then abandon the vehicle.

Following an investigation, police executed a search warrant on a home in the northeast Calgary community of Coral Springs.

Over 70 items directly tied to the robberies were seized by police. A number of weapons and ammunition were also found, including:

  • A 20-gauge shotgun;
  • A .22 calibre LR;
  • Dozens of .22 and .45 calibre rounds;
  • Three shotgun shells

A 2017 Audi A4 which had previously been reported stolen was also seized.

“This was a complex investigation whereby the impacts of criminal behaviour were felt by the victims of the carjackings, as well as community members near the residence where we conducted the search warrant,” said Detective Shelby Stewart with the General Investigations Unit in a release.

Four men have now been charged with stolen property under $5,000 and a number of firearms related offences.
