No more hen-drance: Calgary approves hen keeping license lottery

Anyone looking to add some clucking, feathered friends to their family, now can in Calgary.

The City has announced residents will be able to apply to own hens come March 21.

Under the responsible pet ownership bylaw, you can enter the lottery to be able to keep hens in your backyard in a coop or run.

The program will take 100 applicants in the first year and will require those interested to have completed a care training program.

Some of the other requirements include being 18 years old or having a parent or guardian sign on their behalf, owning the property hens will be kept on, and acquiring a free Premise Identification (PID) Number.

Applicants will also need to get an urban livestock license and have their backyard set up with a coop.

Submissions will be accepted until April 18.

For more information on how to apply, you can head to the City of Calgary website to learn more.
