Calgary Southcentre mall marks Earth Day with recycling drive

To celebrate Earth Day, Southcentre mall is hosting a special recycling drive from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

The recycling event will feature on-site pop-ups from a number of local organizations.

Calgarians will be able to recycle a mix of materials including metals, old electronics, paper, cardboard, beverage containers, and clothing.

All of the recycled materials will be collected at a central collection area in the mall’s southeast parking lot next to the CIBC.

“As a community-minded shopping centre, we believe we have a role to play in promoting and facilitating initiatives that will protect and preserve both our local community and our planet,” says Alexandra Velosa, the marketing manager of Southcentre mall.

“Recycling and upcycling directly contribute to a circular economy that reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills, prevents pollution caused by the collection of new raw materials, conserves natural resources, saves energy and so much more.”

“We are excited to invite Calgarians to celebrate Earth Day with us by safely and responsibly disposing of recyclable materials that can be repurposed in an eco-conscious manner,” said Velosa.

There will be a public education initiative inside the mall including a learning hub with educational resources being presented by Village Electronics Recycling and Federal Metals Inc.

There will also be an art station with eco-friendly crafts being hosted by local artist and biologist Elizabeth Romo Rabago of Ciclomanias and a photo booth with a giant picture frame decorated with recycled materials.
