The pilot project will end in 2023 and aims to improve wastewater treatment through new and innovative technology.

“We are pleased to see Sundre use an advanced technology – electroflocculation – to separate waste from water at its wastewater treatment plant. We applaud the provincial government’s support and funding, which will help reduce the plant’s physical footprint and greenhouse gas emissions,” said Cathy Heron, president of Alberta Municipalities.

The estimated cost of the project is $11.5 million and the estimated cost savings from the new technology is $3.5 million.

“This project is a no-brainer,” said Jason Nixon, Minister of Environment and Parks. “The benefits of this new technology for the health of the Red Deer River, the future of Sundre, and the residents of our community are abundant.

“By partnering to upgrade Sundre’s wastewater treatment plant, the province and municipality are creating jobs and fostering new technology that will save locals millions of dollars.”
