Calgary police have arrested a man after nearly three years of investigating a pair of sexual assaults, where only DNA evidence was available.
In the instances police reference, the suspect approached the women and offered them money in exchange for sex, which they declined.
The first one was on July 23, 2023, between 1 and 2 a.m. on the 1200 block of 4 Street SW. Officers say after the victim was sexually assaulted, she sought treatment at the Sheldon Chumir Centre.
Police arrived and acquired DNA evidence when they couldn’t identify the suspect after all available CCTV footage in the area. The evidence was used to create a profile in the police database after one didn’t appear.
The second happened on Dec. 9, 2024, when the suspect approached a woman sleeping outside on the 1200 block of 17 Avenue SW. When she refused his offer, he sexually assaulted her and then fled the scene.
After she was taken to the hospital, more DNA evidence was acquired.
However, a search of the CCTV footage for the second assault led to an identity that investigators could use to secure a DNA warrant, which was used.
After securing DNA evidence from the person in the video, results came in over a year later on April 14, revealing that they are the same person as the one in the assaults.
On April 15, police arrested 37-year-old Gramey Weldeslesa and charged him with two counts of sexual assault. He is expected to appear in court on May 27.
Officers believe there are more victims and are encouraging anyone with information to contact them.
Police ask anyone with information about these incidents to call them at 403-266-1234 or leave a tip anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
