Hockey Calgary looking to inspire youth to pursue ice hockey

As the Flames playoff pandemonium rises in the city, Hockey Calgary is hoping it will translate into more registrations for next season.

Hockey Calgary, formerly known as the Minor Hockey Association of Calgary, is aiming to inspire young hopefuls looking to pursue the sport of ice hockey.

Executive director Kevin Kobelka says they saw a drop-off during the pandemic of the number of kids playing, but things are picking up.

“We are really eager to get kids back and show we have programs for everybody,” said Kobelka. “There are house lead programs, there are recreation programs, there are elite programs, there are female programs. And for what you’re looking for, whether it’s hockey 24/7 or hockey once a week, we have different programs and we feel that we can offer something to everybody.”

Kobelka hopes the excitement around the Flames’ playoff run will translate into more kids registering to play the sport next winter.

Kobelka says there are lots of ways kids can try out the sport.

“We are very fortunate to have a strong partnership with the Flames Foundation,” he said. “So we have subsidies again for those in need and it’s our Flames Even Strength Program (FESP), so we have that. And for those who want to try hockey who’ve never been in hockey, we have a number of ways to get into the program such as our first shift program, which is a six-week trial to get you up and get you going and it’s a small fee to pay.”

Early registration for next year opens June 15.
