Calgary approves beekeeping license via Urban Livestock program

We’ve all got our hobbies. Now Calgarians interested in beekeeping can now get a license from the city.

The City says it’s pleased to announce the launch of the buzzworthy new Urban Livestock Program which is operated under the Responsible Pet Ownership Bylaw.

The program highlights local beekeeping regulations including expert care guidelines, according to the City of Calgary.

But you have to own the property where you keep the bees and make sure you have all the proper training.

And if you have a colony already you have to have that license.

For example, some requirements to possess a license include owning the property where the colony is kept or consent of the property’s owners, providing proof of completion of training that they were already practicing beekeeping before January 1, 2022, and your house or place of residence must be in good repair, notifying the City if their bee colony is being relocated or moved and lastly, follow the municipal, provincial and federal rules for distribution or sale of honey, states the City of Calgary.

Right now under the guise of pet ownership, the City allows you to have chickens and even bee colonies within the city limits.

The City of Calgary also hopes to introduce licensing for pigeon keeping this Spring.
