New Canada Post stamp offers opportunity to aid Ukrainians

By Andrew Cowie

Canada Post has issued a fundraising stamp for people looking to support Ukraine and the ongoing humanitarian crisis.

A donation of $1 from every booklet of 10 stamps, and 10 cents from each Official First Day Cover/collectible envelope will give aid to those affected by the continuing Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Funds raised will be passed to the Canada-Ukraine Foundation (CUF) which according to Canada Post has a long history of giving assistance to Ukraine.

“It’s with deep concern and compassion that Canadians have watched the devastating events unfolding in Ukraine, which have displaced millions of families,” said Doug Ettinger, president and CEO with Canada Post.

“With this special stamp, Canadians can stand with Ukraine and support the important efforts of the Canada-Ukraine Foundation and their Humanitarian Appeal.”

Orest Sklierenko, president and CEO of the CUF, who met with Ettinger in Ottawa, said the fundraising stamp will help support the millions of people in Ukraine needing assistance.

“The need to support the people of Ukraine has never been greater as the unprovoked and indiscriminate attacks from Russia have led to catastrophic damage to infrastructure, killing of thousands of civilians including children, and millions of people displaced within and outside Ukraine.”

“The toll has been devastating and we are grateful to Canada Post and to every Canadian who offers support.”

Originally issued in 2011, the stamp was designed and photographed by Isabelle Toussaint Design graphique and represents Ukraine’s national flower, the sunflower.

The stamps are now available for pre-order at canadapost.ca and will be available for purchase in post offices starting July 7.

In a recent statement by the United Nations (U.N) on Friday, they said nearly 16 million are in need of humanitarian aid in Ukraine.
