Calgarians Runner’s High returns with ‘Calgary Marathon’ this Sunday, with expected road closures

The Calgary Marathon is back on Sunday but drivers are being warned to plan ahead.

Driving around Calgary Sunday morning might be tough due to a number of road closures that will be in place for the Calgary Marathon.

Kristen Flemming, executive director of Run Calgary says there’s a lot of excitement as it’s the first time the event is looking more normal.

“Everyone seems to be excited. We just did this in September but it was a reduced event with a lot of COVID protocols, we were in a state of emergency here in Calgary and so it was a completely outdoor event,” said Flemming.

If you’re not running in it – it might be harder for you to get around.

Flemming says you can plan accordingly if you have somewhere to be.

“If you go to CalgaryMarathon.com and under any of the distances 50K, marathon, half marathon there is an interactive map where you can toggle and it will show you the exact rolling road closures,” said Flemming.

A number of streets downtown in the Beltline and other communities will be closed Sunday until about 2 p.m. in the afternoon.

There is still room for runners if you want to register at the last minute.

Despite the excitement for the event, Flemming warned it will not be a good day to be driving.

“Your best bet is to come out and share, leave your car home and get out on the route and share with your neighbors as they do something spectacular on Sunday. And those rolling road closures are in effect until about 2 o’clock on Sunday,” said Flemming.

“So from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. expect delays compounded of course by city construction, so not a good time to be out driving,” said Flemming.

You can visit the Calgary Marathon website to see the list of closures that will be in place.
