Calgary lifts State of Local Emergency for a possible flood

The State of Local Emergency for a potential flood in Calgary is now over.

Mayor Jyoti Gondek held another flood update Friday afternoon.

Gondek says a potential storm system that was causing concern for next week is expected to remain well south of the city.

“I can tell you that we have rescinded just now the Local State of Emergency, [and] the weather system that we were concerned about is expected to stay well south of us. So for that reason, we have lifted the state of local emergency,” said Gondek.

The measure was put in place Monday to allow the city to deal with potential flooding related to heavy rain.

Calgary Emergency Management Agency Chief Sue Henry says you should still stay off the rivers.

“Immediate risk of flooding has passed but the rivers are still high there, fast-moving and they are dangerous. The boating advisory remains in effect for both the Bow and Elbow Rivers. Please do not go down to the rivers and use the rivers,” said Henry.

Gondek adds the temporary berm along Memorial Drive will be taken down over the next day and a half. She added she expects traffic to be fully back to normal in the area by Monday, if not sooner.

“So the operation to dismantle the berm will take place over the next couple of days and we anticipate a return to standard traffic patterns by Monday morning at the latest, hopefully by Sunday if we can get the work done quickly,” said Gondek.
