Alberta advocates for wellbeing during men’s mental health month

Alberta is advocating for men’s mental health in June as an important reminder to men of every age and background that their well-being matters, according to a provincial statement.

“Research suggests that men tend to focus less on their health and well-being than women focus on theirs. Men see their doctors less frequently and often put off attending to their physical and mental health needs,” said Jason Copping, Minister of Health.

Copping adds that chronic illnesses in men tend to develop later on in life due to not getting regular check-ups earlier on in life.

“Being aware of preventable health problems and early detection and treatment of diseases like prostate cancer, heart disease and depression will lead to a longer, healthier life,” said Copping.

Copping recommends talking to your general practitioner about small changes to your diet which can vastly improve physical and mental health.

“As Alberta’s Health Minister, I encourage men and boys to seek regular medical advice and early treatment for disease and injury. Make health a priority,” said Copping.
