Alberta is expanding second booster shot eligibility.
People 18 and older will be able to sign up for an appointment starting July 20, so long as they are five months or more from their last booster.
The vaccine is not mandatory and will be available to those who want the additional shot — which is the fourth for many vaccinated people.
“The dose is of most benefit to those at high risk of severe outcome,” the province says.
It notes people will likely see “periods of increased transmission of COVID-19” over the coming months, especially as we transition to the fall and winter seasons.
The province adds that the most common strain of the coronavirus in Alberta is currently the Omicron BA.5 subvariant, which some data has suggested is more transmissible than others.
The Alberta government hopes that expanding vaccine booster eligibility will give people who are most at risk of severe outcome “more choices about increasing their protection during this period of increased community transmission.”
“As we continue to live with COVID, vaccines remain critical to lowering your risk of severe outcomes and protecting our health-care system. Albertans are encouraged to continue to get their first booster and to consider their unique circumstances when making choices about second booster,” Alberta Health Minister Jason Copping said.
Albertans will be able to book appointments for a second booster by calling 811 or going online. The province says some pharmacies will also be providing walk-in opportunities.
More to come.
