Calgary Humane Society offers up free spay and neuter clinic

Calgary Humane Society offers up a free spay and neutered service to what they call, vulnerable pet owners, to provide them with comfort and to control the pet population in the community. Phoenix Phillips reports.

The Calgary Humane Society (CHS) is offering up a free spay and neutered service to vulnerable pet owners to provide them with comfort and to control the pet population in the community.

It’s the second time the community clinic has been offered and the humane society says it’s geared towards owners who have exhausted their budget on basic needs, which doesn’t leave the person with much leftover for their animal.

Danielle says her dog, Nova, is like family and provides emotional and physical support to her daily life.

“Don’t get me wrong, she’s a handful sometimes, but she was a puppy and she learned,” says Danielle. “She’s great now.”

She says she knows the clinic can provide her pet with needs she can’t financially provide.

“We all know that animals don’t live as long, it’s just heartbreaking when it gets to that point,” she says. “For the time, that I just want to make sure that she’s happy and taken care of.”

To qualify for the clinic, an animal must be between two months and six years of age, have no visible illness, and the applicant owns the animal.

“This is something that should be accessible to anybody and everybody,” says CHS director of community services Sally Johnston. “They bring such value and connection to individuals regardless of income.”

The online process is currently open with the goal of providing comfort to pets and their pet owners, as well as controlling the pet population in the community.
