Alberta crash leaves one dead, four in hospital, including toddler

By CityNews Staff

One man is dead and four other people, including a two-year-old girl, have been taken to hospital after a crash in Alberta Friday.

Mounties say they were called to the area of Highway 3 and Highway 280 for reports that a semi-truck had rear-ended a pickup truck and an SUV around 1:50 p.m.

When they arrived, a 62-year-old man — who was driving the pick-up — was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, a 62-year-old woman, was taken to a Calgary hospital by Shock Trauma Air Rescue Service (STARS) with life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the SUV — a 34-year-old woman — and the toddler were also transported to hospital, though it’s unclear how seriously either of them was hurt.

Police say the driver of the semi was taken to Fort MacLeod Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Highway 3 was closed for several hours but reopened by 8:30 p.m. Friday.

It’s unclear what led to the crash, but the RCMP says alcohol or drug impairment were not factors in the incident.

Investigators are asking to speak with anyone who may have seen what happened. You can contact the Wood Buffalo RCMP at 403-945-7200.
