And now, in the dog days of summer, another major deal has been announced.

Former Colorado avalanche and Stanley cup champion Nazem Kadri has agreed to a seven-year contract with the Flames. The deal will pay him $49 million dollars over seven years. Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman says the deal didn’t happen overnight.

“I think the Flames were very aggressive and I honestly believe they’ve known for a few days that they were going to be able to get Kadri if they could move another player,” Friedman said.

Flames traded centre Sean Monahan, along with a first round pick, to the Montreal Canadians. Shedding his cap hit was required to make room for Kadri.

Monahan managed only 23 points in 65 games last season before being sidelined by season-ending hip surgery. Kadri, on the contrary, scored a career-high 87 points last year, before potting an additional 15 on route to his first Stanley Cup.

“When the Huberdeau and Weegar situations came in there and they were in a situation where they were acquiring those players. They said ‘we can still be a good team’. We can still try to contend,” said Flames general manager Brad Treliving, who celebrated the signing along with his 53rd birthday.

Kadri’s contract will expire after the 2028-29 season.
