Alberta government grants $5.2 million to prevent crime

The Alberta government announced Wednesday that they are granting $5.2 million to organizations that work to fight crime.

Minister of Justice and Solicitor General Tyler Shandro announced the Alberta Crime Prevention grant in Calgary, to help reduce the amount of crime that has popped up in the province.

The grant is intended for programs that may include projects to reduce the risk of domestic violence, youth outreach programs, and training and staffing for crime prevention organizations in rural Alberta.

The Alberta Crime Prevention grant provides a one-time $25,000 to $150,000 in funds per year for two years.

“The safety of Albertans is our top priority. Alberta’s government is working to support public safety and will continue taking action to ensure the safety and well-being of our families and friends. The available grants will help ensure we keep Alberta’s communities safe and crime-free for generations to come.,” Shandro said.

The projects any of the organizations commit to for the grant must be involved in crime prevention/community safety and well-being programs, youth gang prevention and exit programs, activities that enhance an organization and/or community’s skills and knowledge to prevent crime. Organizations involved must also be living in Alberta.

Calgary police Chief Cons. Mark Neufeld says the grant will help them continue their commitment to preventing crime from happening in the city, and will help community partners help the police prevent crime.

“The funding is yet another resource for both police as well as our community and non-for profit partners to access in order to deliver additional crime prevention, community safety and wellbeing programs,” Neufeld said.

“I think this will have a significant positive impact on our community for certain, both in the short term and the long term.”

The applications for the grant is accessible for those eligible until Sept. 30.

More information about the grant can be accessed on the Alberta Crime Prevention grant website.
