A U-Haul with a stolen pickup truck and stolen travel trailer, both valued together at $64,000, were chased down and seized by Strathmore RCMP.
Police spotted them at around 2:30 a.m. on Aug. 14 when the vehicles took off after they noticed the police approaching.
Helicopter Air Watch for Community Safety (HAWCS) were sent in to help find the vehicles while police chased after them. Police tried multiple times to stop them.
The pickup with the trailer were abandoned in Strathmore, with the driver hopping into the U-Haul after police spotted them on Highway 1.
Police continued to pursue them in a car chase, describing the driver as “engaged in an erratic driving pattern.” They add the U-Haul was swerving over lanes to get away.
HAWCS spotted the people in the U-Haul, who left the truck behind and fled on foot. Calgary police say they found one of them with their service dog, and were able to make one arrest.
The travel trailer, worth around $40,000 was stolen from an RV dealership in Calgary. The pickup truck, valued at $24,000, was stolen from Olds, Alta. Both owners were unaware of the thefts before police contacted them.
The U-Haul was overdue to be returned and filled with items inside that police believe to be stolen. Police haven’t said what else was found.

The man caught is Devon Tanner, 36, from Red Deer.
Police have charged Tanner 22 times for multiple offences, including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, possession of a controlled substance, and more.
“Strathmore members are active in their patrols throughout our area to keep our residents safe, to detect, and to deter crime. In this case, being observant resulted in the recovery of a significant value of items which were returned to their owns, and one of the offenders involved at this time will face charges,” said S Sgt. Mark Wielgosz with the Strathmore RCMP.
RCMP are seeking the other suspect, and look to identify owners of recovered property that was in the U-Haul truck.
