Hundreds of plaques stolen from Calgary cemetery

About 300 memorial plaques were stolen from a northwest Calgary cemetery, the latest in a series of plaque thefts this year.

Calgary police say it happened sometime between Aug. 18 and 23 at Queen’s Park Cemetery.

The thieves took 300 bronze plaques which commemorated deceased loved ones, as well as several bronze flower vases.

Police say cemetery staff were told about the missing plaques by family members that were visiting the graves.

“The theft of these plaques will undoubtedly leave citizens feeling disappointed and upset,” said Staff Sgt. Colin Chisholm with Calgary police.

Investigators add the plaques and vases were likely stolen to sell the bronze within them because of the rising cost of metal.
