Alberta teacher registry launches Sept. 1, NDP call it deflection

The Alberta government is set to start an online registry of teachers and school administrators on Sept 1.

About 160,000 educators who received their certification since 1954 will be included in the Teacher and Teacher Leader Registry, which will go online Thursday.

The government says that for every certificated teacher, the registry will list all their legal names, the type of certificate they hold and the dates those were issued.

The registry will also include details about whether the teacher or school administrator is deceased, has been disciplined, or has had their license suspended, according to a statement from the Alberta government.

Discipline hearings dating back to 1990 will also be published and the province will consider requests for exemption from the online registry on a case-by-case basis.

Parents, students and any member of the public can access the registry and also file complaints about a teacher or a school.

However, Alberta’s opposition NDP thinks the Alberta government should focus on issues relating to students and teachers right now.

NDP critic for education Sarah Hoffman says the education minister, Adriana Lagrange, is distracting Albertans “from the catalogue of harm she has inflicted on our education system.”

“The UCP government’s quest to sabotage public education by failing to fund growing school divisions has caused great hardships for students, staff, and families,” Hoffman said.

“She should work on replacing the 1,000 teachers she has taken out of the system through her deliberate withholding of the education budget from schools.”

The Alberta government has promised more teachers in the classroom, with them planning to hire up to 800 more teachers and principals for the upcoming school year, which includes funding for teacher assistants.

They are also proving $50 million to support the increase in salaries for teachers, with the goal of providing stability for school authorities.

The government will be updating K-3 math, K-3 English language arts and literature, and K-6 physical education and wellness in Sept. 2022.
