A Calgary man is facing three charges after he allegedly used a stolen ID to buy guns online from a legitimate retailer.
Police say they searched a home in the southeast community of Inverness on Aug. 25 on a warrant related to stolen documents.
Officers found over 75 items they believe were stolen in various thefts, including electronics, identification documents, passports, and replica guns.
Investigators believe the stolen documents were being used to forge identities to buy weapons online from a legitimate gun shop.
Ross Michael Darr, 30, is charged with one count each of possession of identification documents, possession of stolen property, and a breach of a firearms prohibition.
“It is important for us to be able to track where crime guns are coming from. In this case, victims’ stolen identification from car thefts and break and enters were being used in attempt to create fraudulent identities that would then be used to purchase firearms from a legitimate online firearms retailer,” said Insp. Shanon Scott with Calgary police. “The great work of our investigators to recover the stolen property undoubtedly stopped more firearms from getting into the wrong hands.”
Police are in the process of contacting the people whose documents they recovered.
If you have had a break-in recently, police say you should make sure anything that might have been taken is reported through the proper channels.
