Emergency crews say one woman was taken to hospital in serious condition after an oxygen tank exploded in a southeast Calgary retirement home Thursday morning.
Firefighters were called to the George C. King Tower in East Village after its alarm system went off at around 6 a.m.
Officers with Calgary police tell CityNews a tenant lit a cigarette near an oxygen tank which caused it to explode.
Calgary Fire says the explosion caused a fire in a unit on the fifth floor of the building.
Twenty-two residents were evacuated from the building, while others were told to shelter in place because of the “amount of smoke in the hallways and mobility challenges.”
People have been let back into their units after crews determined it was safe.
Calgary Fire adds the unit where the explosion happened “sustained fire and smoke damage with some additional smoke damage to the fifth floor hallway.”
No other injuries were reported.
