The Pig and Duke Neighbourhood Pub was ordered to shut down by Alberta Health Services (AHS) after inspectors found a “significant cockroach infestation.”
The location on 12 Avenue SW in Calgary’s Beltline community was served an official order of an executive officer dated Sept. 7.
The AHS health inspector found the insects on the floors, walls, and ceiling tiles of “the back food preparation area.” Live cockroaches were also found crawling around.
“There was an accumulation of food debris and grease buildup in various areas of the food handling areas, including but not limited to hard-to-reach areas, beneath cooking equipment in the main kitchen line and back preparation area,” the AHS document reads in part.

AHS adds the pub didn’t keep any records of its pest control measures, in breach of the Public Health Act.
Jamie Taylor, general manager of Pig and Duke, says the pub is working with AHS and an exterminator to get rid of the problem and reopen its doors.
“Unfortunately the apartment building which Pig & Duke resides in had a cockroach problem dating back to January 2022, largely related to a garbage chute for the entire apartment complex only 30’ from our kitchen,” Taylor told CityNews. “They sprayed to combat the problem, which only moves cockroaches around to other areas and the result is our temporary shut down.”
Last month, a similar cockroach infestation shut down certain restaurants in the CORE Shopping Centre.
