Chetamon wildfire in Jasper National Park remains contained

Parks Canada says the Chetamon wildfire burning in Jasper National Park remains contained and their “current efforts limit future risk.”

Officials say there continues to be no danger to nearby communities at this time.

The wildfire remains at approximately 6,000 hectares as of Wednesday Sep. 21.

Currently, there are 112 firefighters and four helicopters in the area fighting the fire.

Although efforts to contain the fire have been effective, and fire activity has slowed down thanks to cooler weather, the wildfire in Chetamon remains active in many hot spots.

However, extinguishing those hot spots may take several weeks, depending on weather conditions, according to Parks Canada.

“Hot spots are isolated or solitary pockets of active wildfire, and are often characterized by smouldering rather than fully visible flames. Hot spots may ignite nearby fuels (grass, deadfall, moss, etc., and cause the spread of fire,” explained Parks Canada officials.

Meanwhile, as there’s minimal precipitation in the forecast, increased smoke is expected in the area for the next few days.
