The cSPACE officially launched on Sept. 29 with performances by Calgary’s current poet laureate Wakefield Brewster and Calgary musician Kenna Burima.
The Eau Claire & Bow River Lumber Co., which was established in 1886, includes accessible ramps and a seating deck area.
“Opening this historic lumber building as a neighborhood hub for arts and community groups will activate the vacant historic asset and enliven this area of downtown for Calgarians to enjoy,” said Deeter Schurig, President and CEO, cSPACE Projects.
Eau Claire improvements program manager Dennis Hoffart says taking over the historic building is the best plan of action while its new home is being relocated and prepared in Eau Claire Plaza.
“It was clear that the space would be well suited to support our communities and neighbourhoods in the downtown,” said Hoffart.
“After much deliberation over the potential uses for the space, we are excited to see what cSPACE has planned for the space and community.”
cSPACE, which originally launched in 2011, supports artists, non-profits, and entrepreneurs while advocating for community-led change.
