Weegar joined the Flames from the Florida Panthers, along with Jonathan Huberdeau, in the trade that sent Matthew Tkachuk to the Sunshine State.

The 28-year-old defenceman and his agent told the Flames they wanted to wrap this up a contract before the season so that it would not be a distraction. Weegar had eight goals and 44 points last season which landed him 27th amongst NHL defenders and his plus-40 rating ranked him sixth.

Weegar is expected to skate on the top pairing with Chris Tanev to start the season.

Huberdeau signed an eight-year, $84 million extension two weeks after the swap.
