The AHL’s Calgary Wranglers named their play-by-play voice for the upcoming season Friday, and it’s CityNews’ own Sandra Prusina.
“I’m honoured to be behind the microphone for the Calgary Wranglers,” she said. “Growing up in this city, I know what kind of a special connection Calgarians have with hockey, and I think the Wranglers will be no different.
“I’m so grateful for the opportunity the organization has given me. It’s an honour.”
The Calgary-based broadcaster has a long resume and deep involvement in sport – both at home and on the international stage.
She’s covered three Olympic Games, the women’s World Cup, the Professional Women’s Hockey Players’ Association and the American Hockey League.
She was also the voice of the Calgary Inferno of the Canadian Women’s Hockey League for three seasons.
Prusina is the CityNews radio sports anchor and does play-by-play for the UofC Dinos.
She becomes the first woman to do play-by-play for an AHL team.
Prusina recommends that women in sport surround themselves with good people and work at their craft.
“Never be afraid to ask questions. No matter the level of broadcasting, there will be obstacles but believe in yourself,” she told CityNews. “More and more opportunities are opening for women thanks to those before us who have shattered glass ceilings. It’s not just in sports broadcasting but front-office roles, management, scouting – you name it.
“If you can see it, you can be it.
