Serious crash shuts down Highway 1 west of Calgary

Cochrane RCMP responded to a serious crash on Highway 1 involving a semi hauling a trailer and an SUV early Tuesday night.
Police say it happened near Range Road 50 between Ridge Road and Hermitage Road.

Two people that were in the SUV were taken to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the semi was not hurt.
Mounties say winter driving conditions were the main factor in the crash and appear to have caused about 15 other collisions along Highway 1 and Highway 1A through Cochrane, as well.

Westbound traffic was diverted around the crash for hours and was reopened just after 8 p.m.

Motorists are asked to drive with extreme caution, black ice and heavy snow are impacting visibility and traction on the road.
