Calgary cold snap ending, temperature to rise nearly 20 degrees Thursday

Calgarians dealt with brutal winter conditions all week, including a snowfall warning and wind chill temperatures around -30 degrees.

However, things appear to be warming up over the next few days.

Environment and Climate Change Canada says daily high temperatures will hover around -3 degrees over the Remembrance Day long weekend, with lows dipping between -8 and -11.

By the beginning of next week, temperatures should break into the positives, with a high of 10 degrees expected on Tuesday.

Calgary’s nasty cold snap

Nearly 10 centimetres of snow fell in the city Monday, Nov. 7.

Environment Canada says extreme cold temperatures over the last few days led to a risk of frostbite, which can cause permanent damage if not treated right away.

The heavy snow coupled with frigid temperatures led to icy conditions across much of the city.

Chris McGeachy, spokesperson for the City of Calgary, says snow clearing crews laid abrasives like sand and gravel to improve traction on major roadways.

“Typically, [we’re] laying those on trouble spots that can include bridges, hills, intersections,” he explained.

It wasn’t just slippery on the roads all week, it’s been icy on walkways as well. Paramedics tell CityNews winter conditions usually lead to an increase in the number of slips and falls they respond to.

Stuart Brideau, spokesperson for EMS, says it’s important to wear proper footwear and consider the way you walk when heading outdoors in winter weather to avoid falling down and potentially hurting yourself.

“AHS likes to advocate what penguins have known for millions of years, and that is to walk like a penguin,” Brideau explained. “If you lower your centre of gravity and use shortened, shuffled steps, that decreases your chances of slipping.”
