Calgary family wins $1M in lottery: ‘I couldn’t believe it’

A Calgary family of three took home $1 million from the Lotto 649 Gold Ball draw in late October, becoming the first Albertans to win the prize.

Jasbir, Sukhmander, and Jagmohan Sangha have been playing for decades, according to a release from the Alberta Gaming Liquor and Canabis.

The trio bought their ticket from the Co-op Food Centre on Hamptons Drive NW on Oct. 7.

Jasbir took the ticket into a nearby store on Oct. 25 and “was shocked” when he saw that he won.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Jasbir said. “I told my wife and kids first.”

The Sanghas, according to the AGLC, are the first winners from Alberta to take home the million-dollar guaranteed prize since Lotto 649 introduced the Gold Ball draw in early September.

The very first winner won $36 million on Oct. 29 in Quebec.

The three have different plans with what they will do with their winnings.

“We are going on a trip soon so we can use the money to upgrade it,” Jasbir said.

The AGLC says Sukhmander plans to put his portion towards bills and for a “rainy day,” and Jagmohan is thinking about an early retirement.

The winning numbers were 2880790-01.
