Calgary’s free fare zone has new name, TD

The city of Calgary has announced Friday the city’s free fare zone that runs along 7 Avenue downtown is now called TD Free Fare Zone.

The city says in a release the new name comes after “Calgary transit has entered a five-year-agreement with TD Bank Group (TD) to sponsor the TD Free Fare Zone.”

“We’re pleased to strike this partnership to create the TD Free Fare Zone,” said Mayor Jyoti Gondek. “Calgary is leading Canada as this is the first time a transit agency has worked with a sponsor to rename a section of its network. We are finding innovative revenue sources to support our operational costs while we look to expand transit service and improve reliability.”

The city adds the sponsorship will give Calgary transit more “non-fare revenue,” including revenues from advertising and reserved parking fees.

Meanwhile, TD will enjoy a significant presence in the downtown area.

“At TD, we recognize the importance of connected communities and the role they play in helping Calgarians participate, and be included in all that our city has to offer,” said Robert Ghazal, senior vice president, branch banking, Prairie Region. “The CTrain and the TD Free Fare Zone bring people together from across the city for shared experiences, whether it be for work, leisure, or tourism.”

The city says Calgary transit has issued a request in 2021 to rename the free fare zone, and people will start seeing the new banners and signage starting of the new year.
