Calgary launches ‘Support Local YYC Campaign’ for the holiday season

Calgarians are encouraged to support and shop local this holiday season as part of the fourth annual Support Local YYC Campaign.

This event showcases the benefits of supporting locally run small businesses when purchasing gifts and planning celebrations at one of the busiest times of the year.

“Small businesses are the engine of our economy, accounting for over 95 per cent of businesses in the city, and generating four times more economic activity than large corporations,” said Mayor Jyoti Gondek.

For example, Calgarians are encouraged to be open to exploring the possibilities of local shops and services like independent bookstores, multicultural shops, neighborhood restaurants or bakeries, and a café or spas, or salon facilities.

December is considered a vital month for small businesses, as it can determine if they’ll survive long-term, according to a municipal release.

On average, more than half of the $100 earned ends up being recycled and recycled back into the economy, says the release.

“While we encourage Calgarians to support locals throughout the year, for the majority of small businesses in Calgary, this is the season that determines their survival and growth. By supporting local, we’re not only helping these businesses thrive and grow, but we’re also supporting local jobs and workers, and ensuring more money stays in our community,” said Erin Chrusch, leader of Business & Local Economy at The City of Calgary.

Those interested in supporting Calgary’s local economy can refer to the designated 15 Improvement Areas in Calgary (BIAs) including 17th Ave Retail & Entertainment District, 4th Street South West, Beltline, Bridgeland, Calgary Downtown Association, Chinatown, Crescent Heights Village, Greenview Industrial, Inglewood, International Avenue, Kensington, Mainstreet Bowness, Marda Loop, Montgomery on the Bow, and Victoria Park.

Calgarians can also champion buying local by not only voting with their dollar, but by leaving positive reviews on social media and online using the #SupportLocalYYC to highlight local businesses, shops, and restaurants.
