Calgary Zoo celebrates World Wildlife Conservation Day

The Calgary Zoo celebrated World Wildlife Conservation Day (WWCD) Sunday by sharing some photos of its family of wild animals.

“The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo’s mission is to take and inspire action to save wildlife and wild spaces,” the zoo tweeted.

The WWCD was created to raise awareness about endangered species and preserving their habitat.

According to the Science World’s website, there are dozens of endangered species in Canada.

“Wildlife Preservation Canada has identified dozens of species that are endangered, including a small, migratory shorebird in the Atlantic region called the Piping plover and the Vancouver Island marmot, considered Canada’s most endangered mammal,” reads Science World’s website.

However, conservation efforts in Canada, and around the world have contributed to the recovery of some species, according to Science World.

“One example of this is the Burrowing Owl, which had a record 50 owls return to breeding grounds in 2015 after reintroduction efforts by the Burrowing Owl Recovery Team and Burrowing Owl Conservation Society of BC in 1992.”

Meanwhile, various organizations celebrated the special day on Twitter, including the Wilder Institute, and Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC).

“The burrowing owls in our head-starting program get ~6 mice/day. Since they naturally cache their food, our team will remove mice not eaten & replace them with fresh mice to reduce the risk of bacteria growth. This way, they can still maintain their natural behaviours!” the Wilder Institute tweeted.

“Save the whales, so they can save the world!” WDC tweeted.
