Alberta’s police watchdog has charged a Calgary officer Tuesday for sexual assault in relation to an off-duty incident after a year-long investigation.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) says the officer was at a licensed establishment on Oct. 9, 2021, when he touched a staff member in a “sexual manner” without her consent.
The police watchdog passed the information to the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service, which says the evidence proved enough to charge the police officer.
Const. Gurluv Singh was charged on Dec. 6 but was released on an appearance notice for court.
Singh is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 5.
ASIRT says it is not going to provide any further information.
In a statement to CityNews, the Calgary Police Service (CPS) said once news surfaced of the allegation, swift action was put in place.
“We notified the Director of Law Enforcement, who then assigned the file to the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) for further investigation,” CPS said in a statement.
Calgary police say the officer, a five-year member of CPS, was put on administrative duty with no contact with the public during the investigation. They say his status will be reviewed due to the charges.
“The Calgary Police Service takes allegations such as these very seriously and have committed to thorough and transparent accountability. These allegations impact the trust and confidence that the public has in our Service, and the importance of this trust and confidence is not lost on our members who work tirelessly to serve Calgarians to the best of their ability,” the statement read.
