New Year, same old resolutions: Calgary gyms offer advice on sticking to your goals

Is your New Year’s Resolution to be more active and join a gym? You’re not alone—Calgary gyms saying they’re busier than ever to start 2023. Jillian Code reports on how you can turn the resolution into a habit.

You’ve likely heard the phrase “new year, new me” several times in January. But how many people actually stick with their goals?

For some, their New Year’s resolution is to get in shape, be healthier, or to get out and be active. As 2023 kicks off, some Calgary gyms say they’re already seeing a boost in attendance.

Cheryce Martine, personal training manager at Rumble boxing studio, says it’s important to give it your all.

“You don’t have to be a boxer, you don’t have to be a pro. You can come as you are and then we’ll help you along the way,” Martine says.

She says she’s noticed new faces around the boxing studio already.

“We had a couple people today actually try out classes for the first time.”

Martine adds changing your New Year’s resolution into a lifestyle can be easier if you have people supporting you.

“Get a buddy, get a friend. Make friends here and then if you have somebody that you’re gonna come meet at class […] we’ll all be waiting here for you, excited to have you.”

Getting in shape is one of the most common New Year’s resolutions, however it’s also sometimes one that won’t pass the test of time.

January motivation can turn into February indifference, but according to Reese Risdon, general manager at MOVE fitness centre, it doesn’t have to be that way.

“Be consistent. So, don’t try to come everyday and make massive changes in your life. Come a couple times a week, maybe three times, so it is sustainable for you,” Risdon tells CityNews.

Risdon adds he’s noticed more people feeling anxious heading to gyms because of the COVID-19 pandemic. He says MOVE gyms in Calgary are designed to reduce anxiety for first-timers through dimmed lights, loud music, and a sense of community.

Risdon says there are some things to consider before signing up for a gym membership.

“Proximity for sure. Make it somewhere that’s gonna be achievable to continue to go to. Maybe don’t look for the best deal, look for what’s good for you,” he says.
