Calgary’s Eau Claire Market to be replaced by Green Line

A long-tenured and unique mall in Calgary’s Eau Claire community will be demolished in 2024 to make way for a new LRT station along the city’s future Green Line. Taylor Braat speaks with the Green Line’s CEO.

The City of Calgary, along with Harvard Developments, has reached a new agreement in principle to demolish Eau Claire Market and build an underground Green Line Station at 2 Avenue SW.

The agreement includes the purchase of land for the station and the lease of extra land for construction operations. Also, The market will remain open and operational until the second quarter of 2024, when the city will go ahead with the demolition.

Meanwhile, nearby restaurants JOEY Eau Claire and LOCAL Public Eatery will be unaffected and will remain open.

“Green Line was designed as a city-shaping project, and there is no greater example of that than the opportunities for future transit-oriented development at this site,” said Darshpreet Bhatti, CEO of Green Line LRT. “This is a critically important station along the 46-km future alignment and will bridge the Eau Claire and Chinatown communities and connect Calgarians to a treasured part of the city.”

Rosanne Hill Blaisdell, president and CEO of Harvard Developments, says this is a key factor to transform Calgary’s downtown.

“We acquired this property in 2004 not for what it was … but with a vision for what it could be. We believe this site, with an LRT station, has the potential to be a key component in the transformation of downtown,” Hill Blaisdell said.
