Calgarians can provide feedback on RVs in neighbourhoods

The City of Calgary wants to hear from residents about RV parking in residential neighbourhoods.

A statement released Monday says the current rules only allow RVs to be parked on a hard-surfaced driveway or parking stall for 36 hours.

The city adds that the 36-hour front area residential RV parking term allows for “reasonable use of RVs” for cleaning, loading and unloading. The bylaw does not limit side or rear parking in residential areas.

“Residential RV parking regulations mitigate potential impacts on properties and in neighbourhoods, including visibility and safety concerns (such as blocking views along streets and sidewalks for recreational use and drivers), and overall aesthetics,” said Aalika Kohli, business strategist with the city’s Community Strategies, in a statement.

“As RV ownership has evolved locally, we are seeking Calgarians’ feedback to update the definition of RVs, and to better understand perspectives on parking RVs in residential communities, from both owners and neighbours.”

In addition, residents are not to use RVs for long-term care on residential areas, according to city bylaws.

Back in June, city council asked its administration to review the current rules and look at what other jurisdictions do.

As part of the review, people can head to the city’s website to offer their opinion on what dictates a recreational vehicle, where they can be parked, and for how long.

The website will be open for comment until Feb. 13.

The comments will be used to inform recommendations to the community development committee in May.
