Calgary man charged with impaired driving killing woman

Calgary Police Service (CPS) says a 26-year-old man involved in a fatal crash that killed a woman in May 2022 has been charged with impaired driving involving “cannabis.”

Steven Nathaniel Watkins has been charged with operating a motor vehicle while impaired, and operating a motor vehicle while impaired causing death.

The charges come in the aftermath of a downtown crash late last May, when a 24-year-old woman was killed at 3rd Street SW. She was hit by a vehicle right in front of the Core Shopping Centre.

Police say, originally, they thought the woman was a pedestrian but further investigation shows she was a passenger in the car, and fell out when the accused suddenly reversed and turned the vehicle.

Officers add the vehicle, a black Kia Soul, ran over the woman, trapping her underneath before hitting another car that was unoccupied and parked on the east side of the road.

CPS says the woman suffered fatal injuries and died shortly after in hospital.

Meanwhile, officers say the driver was found unconscious and was taken to hospital for treatment. Investigation shows he was driving with a quantity of THC, from cannabis, exceeding the legal limit.

He is expected to appear in court on Monday, Feb. 27.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police at 403-266-1234, or leave a tip anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
