Calgary might expand by over 400 acres

Calgary could grow even bigger with the annexing of lands on the west side of its southern boundary, and the public can weigh in.

In a news release, the Annexation Negotiation Committee (ANC), which is a collaboration between Foothills County and the City of Calgary, has agreed upon a “multiphase public engagement strategy” to address the proposed annexation of the area.

Landowners and the public will be able to weigh in and identify “opportunities and challenges” starting with the first phase in April.

The area includes about 415 acres of Foothills County, near Spruce Meadows.

Foothills County was earlier identified as a long-term “growth area” for Calgary through the city’s 2017 Foothills County development plan. This says it could be incorporated into the city.

In addition, it is enlisting an engagement consultant to “ensure an independent and transparent process.”

“We’re looking forward to an engagement program that will provide an opportunity to hear directly from both Foothills and Calgary residents,” said Ward 12 Coun. and ANC co-chair Evan Spencer in a release.
