Teen dead in Calgary Martindale shooting: police

A teenager is dead after a shooting in the Calgary northeast community of Martindale Tuesday.

Calgary police were called to Martin Crossing Crescent at around 1:30 a.m. for reports of a “shooting in an alley.”

In an update Tuesday afternoon, they say it happened on Martindale Drive NE and the victim, a 15-year-old girl, was shot in the passenger seat of a vehicle.

As a result, they claim the driver of the vehicle fled to Martin Crossing Crescent to call police.

Meanwhile, police say the suspects fled in an “unknown direction.”

“We are still in the early stages of this investigation, and we have a lot of unanswered questions that we are working through,” said S Sgt Martin Schiavetta in a statement.

“At this point, we are unable to confirm if this shooting was targeted, and we have dedicated a significant amount of resources to identify any persons involved.”

This marks Calgary’s third homicide in 2023.

‘This is a very scary situation’: neighbour

Manu Rattan has lived in the neighbourhood since 2016 and told CityNews something like this has never happened before.

“I have kids at home, so yeah, this is a very scary situation,” he said.

Rattan says he was woken up by a car driving fast, and then at around 2 a.m., he saw police cars just outside of his home.

At this time, officers say there is no description of the suspect, and it’s unknown if the incident was targeted.

Investigators say details about the victim will be released when the autopsy is completed. The next of kin has been notified.

Police ask anyone with information about this incident, including CCTV footage or dashcam footage, to call them at 403-266-1234 or leave a tip anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
