One person is dead after an “alcohol-fuelled fight” broke out and led to multiple stabbings outside a nightclub in downtown Calgary early Saturday.
Calgary police say it happened around 2 a.m. in a parking lot outside Commonwealth Bar & Stage on 7 Street and 10 Avenue SW.
Two victims were found with stab wounds, with one being a 21-year-old who was declared dead after being rushed to hospital, officers say. The other was taken to hospital in stable condition.
Additionally, investigators say a third victim was found shortly after with stab wounds, who was also taken to hospital in stable condition and has since been released. It’s not clear if the victim is related to the other two stabbings at this time.
Four witnesses and suspects were also taken into custody after police Canine Unit officers chased them on foot. Three are still in custody as of Saturday afternoon pending further investigation, police say.
A motive is still being investigated.
Additionally, roads in the area were closed as police investigated, and they have since reopened.
Meanwhile, officers believe numerous witnesses were present and captured the incident on their phones, and are asking them to come forward.
Specifically, they are looking for a potential witness–believed not to be involved–who left the scene in a dark-coloured Tesla.
“Our investigators are working tirelessly to piece together the events that led up to this fatal altercation,” CPS Homicide Unity Staff Sgt. Sean Gregson said in a release.
“It is believed that this was an alcohol-fuelled fight, that tragically took the life of one man. We are committed to finding answers for the victim’s family and are pleading with anyone with information to come forward.”
An autopsy is expected to be completed on Tuesday.
Police ask anyone with information about this incident to call them at 403-266-1234 or leave a tip anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
