Mother killed 7-year-old son before taking her own life: Calgary police

Police say a woman killed her seven‑year‑old son before taking her own life in a northeast Calgary home.

Officers were called to a home in Temple just after 2 p.m. on Wednesday for a welfare check, where they found a woman and a young child dead.

Autopsies completed on Thursday determined the boy’s death was a homicide and his 42‑year‑old mother died by suicide.

Police say they believe the mother was responsible for the death of her son and are not looking for any suspects. There was no known history of family violence in the household, according to investigators.

The names of the two are not being released to protect the family’s privacy.

“This is a tragic and traumatic event,” said CPS Staff Sgt. Mark Rahn in a statement. “We recognize that this affects not only the family of the victims, but members of the wider community as well.”

The case marks the second time in just over a month that Calgary police have investigated a suspicious death involving a child.

At the end of April, officers found two children dead inside a vehicle in northwest Calgary. In that case, a 37‑year‑old father was charged with two counts of first‑degree murder.

Police are encouraging anyone experiencing abuse or violence in a family or intimate relationship to seek support in a way that feels safe, noting free, confidential help is available by calling 211.
